Assessment
The course consists of independent learning units. There are three main forms of assessment in the course:
external, internal and synoptic.
External assessments include exams and a practical task set and marked by the exam board.
Internal assessment involves assignments set and assessed by teachers, whilst a synoptic assessment comprises a practical task set and marked externally by the exam board.

You will study elements of biology, chemistry and physics over 2 years. Units studied include:
- Principles and applications of applied science.
- Practical scientific procedures and techniques.
- Scientific investigation skills.
- Human physiology.
- Industrial applications of chemical reactions.

Subject entry requirements
- Grade 4/5 in science and grade 4 in English and maths.
Sixth Form entry requirements
- 4 A-levels over 2 years: for students who have achieved 5 or more grade 7s or above including English and maths (grade 5 or above).
- 3 A-levels over 2 years: for students who have achieved 5 grade 5s or above including English and maths.
- Level 3 vocational courses: for students who have achieved 5 grade 4s or above including English and maths.
Skills learned
Studying level 3 applied science course will help to develop a number of transferable skills that will be of benefit in future study and employment, both in and out of the science sector. These include the ability to carry out a range of practical tasks carefully and accurately, researching and presenting information, working as a team, managing time and organising work and communicating information to varied audiences.
Beyond the classroom
Future pathways
This course is for post-16 learners who want to continue their education through applied learning and who aim to progress to higher education vocational qualifications such as the BTEC higher national diploma in applied sciences or a full-time degree in applied sciences or forensic science and ultimately to employment, possibly in the applied science sector. The course enables the learners to develop the transferable and higher order skills which are valued by higher education providers and employers.
